On September 28, 2020, the illegal clear-cutting of indigenous Begyeli ancestral lands began in a biodiversity hotspot in coastal Cameroon. Cameroun Vert SARL (Camvert) is owned by logger Aboukabar al Fatih, who is close to Cameroon’s ruling party. Camvert oversees the largest monoculture palm oil plantation in Central Africa (50,000 hectares of forest) for a production of about 180,000

Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon. For several years, Cameroon has been faced with a dilemma

Motorized horizontal screw presses were preferred in all four zones, followed by manual vertical press while semi-automated palm oil press was rarely used. As opposed to the other artisanal palm oil presses, which were mostly used for commercial purpose, the manual vertical press was mostly bought for home use.

The ability to simultaneously de-pulp and press is a major advantage of this type of press. Small expellers may be manually operated or motorised. These expellers have been the dominant–if not the exclusive equipment–used by small-scale palm oil processors in Cameroon.

to switch to planting oil palm (Ngando et al. 2011). This is further illustrated by the fact that the purchase of germinated oil palm seeds (chitted nuts) by small- and medium-sized farmers at the Centre for Oil Palm Research at La Dibamba (Cameroon) rose from 20% of the total production in 1996 to an average of 60% during the past 10 years.

FAQ
- QWhat drives oil palm expansion in Cameroon?AThird, oil palm expansion in Cameroon is predominantly driven by non-industrial producers and coordinated around a burgeoning informal milling sector ( Ordway et al., 2019 ). Cameroon can thus be looked upon as a major region of growth when it comes to oil palm production and expansion in Africa.
- QAre non-industrial producers driving oil palm production in Cameroon?ANon-industrial producers are driving oil palm production in Cameroon. We analyze the drivers of oil palm production in Cameroon. Access to information and land tenure systems play a crucial role in farmer decision-making. Market orientation also matters in oil palm production.
- QAre you a factory?AYes, we are a factory, and we also have Overseas Trading Department, our oil processing machines have been sold all over the world.
- QWhen did oil palm grow in South Cameroon?AOil palm expansion in Southwest Cameroon was mapped from 2000 to 2015 - a period of national growth in production and area expansion of the crop (Fig. 1 ). To classify oil palm, forest, and other land cover, we used 30 m resolution Landsat satellite data.
- QWhich region of Cameroon has the largest oil palm production?AOur analysis focused on the Southwest Region of Cameroon, which encompasses the largest area of national oil palm production (40%) and is 86% forested ( Fig. 1; MINADER, 2012 ). Fig. 1. Study area where surveys were conducted in the Southwest region of Cameroon.
- QDoes clearing forest increase palm oil production in southwest Cameroon?AWe found that 73% of oil palm producers in Southwest Cameroon reported clearing forest to expand cultivation, based on a survey of 546 farms. The magnitude of expansion was explained by differences in palm oil milling strategies and supply chain integration.
- QHow does palm oil supply chain work in Cameroon?ASchematic of palm oil supply chain in Cameroon. Oil palm producers use different milling strategies at the processing stage that are linked to their role in the supply chain. Percentages indicate the fraction of survey respondents that follow a given milling path in the supply chain.
