Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon. For several years, Cameroon has been faced with a dilemma

The oilcake leaves the extraction machine through an adjustable cone and is then delivered to the second pressing. Because of their high oil content, Palm kernels have to be subjected to 2 stage pressing for maximum oil yield. The residue from First Stage Press is then transferred to a second palm kernel oil expeller machine for final crushing.

Since oil palm production in Cameroon is driven by non-industrial producers and given the rise and income-generating effect of such farms in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa (Chamberlin and Jayne, 2020), understanding what motivates farmers to cultivate oil palm as a food or cash crop can reveal pathways for enhancing rural livelihoods

Oil palm is the highest oil producing plant, with an average yield of 3.5 tons of oil/ha/year. In 2006, palm oil became the world’s most important edible oil with 37 million tons produced, accounting for 25% of the total oils and fats production. In Cameroon, palm oil meets 80% of total edible oil needs and it is estimated that 30% of crude

about 90,000 ha for the non-industrial oil palm area in Cameroon (Bakoume and Mahbob 2006). Oil palm smallholdings have been booming since the mid-1990s notably since 1993 with a trebling of planted areas (Rafflegeau and Ndigui 2001).The upsurge has been more in communities around the oil palm agro-industrial corporations of SOCAPALM, CDC
FAQ
- QWhere does oil palm grow in Cameroon?ACultivation of oil palm is more prevalent in the Southwest, South, and Littoral regions of Cameroon ( Li et al., 2015). In these regions, the expansion of oil palm is mostly carried out by non-industrial producers at the expense of secondary forests, with minimal expansion into pristine forests.
- QWhat drives oil palm expansion in Cameroon?AThird, oil palm expansion in Cameroon is predominantly driven by non-industrial producers and coordinated around a burgeoning informal milling sector ( Ordway et al., 2019 ). Cameroon can thus be looked upon as a major region of growth when it comes to oil palm production and expansion in Africa.
- Qls the product 100% assembled?AYes, all the products are 136% assembled.
- QDoes clearing forest increase palm oil production in southwest Cameroon?AWe found that 73% of oil palm producers in Southwest Cameroon reported clearing forest to expand cultivation, based on a survey of 546 farms. The magnitude of expansion was explained by differences in palm oil milling strategies and supply chain integration.
- QDoes deforestation cause palm oil production in southwest Cameroon?ADeforestation in Southwest Cameroon for palm oil production is often attributed to large-scale, agro-industrial expansion. However, Ordway et al. reveal that much recent expansion can be attributed to non-industrial producers establishing near informal, non-industrial palm oil mills. Here,
- QAre non-industrial producers driving oil palm production in Cameroon?ANon-industrial producers are driving oil palm production in Cameroon. We analyze the drivers of oil palm production in Cameroon. Access to information and land tenure systems play a crucial role in farmer decision-making. Market orientation also matters in oil palm production.
- QHow many palm oil mills are there in Cameroon?AThere are currently about 498 palm oil mills in the South West Region (largest palm oil producing region) of Cameroon alone, of which only 5 are fully automated/ industrial mills (Ordway et al., 2019).
