However, for many years, Cameroon has been running an annual structural deficit, where processors are faced with raw material shortfall despite the anticipated boost in processing. ASROC says that the shortage peaked at 160,000 tons in 2022, from 130,000 tons in 2020 caused by a faster increase in processing capacity than in crude palm oil production capacity in the country.

to switch to planting oil palm (Ngando et al. 2011). This is further illustrated by the fact that the purchase of germinated oil palm seeds (chitted nuts) by small- and medium-sized farmers at the Centre for Oil Palm Research at La Dibamba (Cameroon) rose from 20% of the total production in 1996 to an average of 60% during the past 10 years.

Since oil palm production in Cameroon is driven by non-industrial producers and given the rise and income-generating effect of such farms in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa (Chamberlin and Jayne, 2020), understanding what motivates farmers to cultivate oil palm as a food or cash crop can reveal pathways for enhancing rural livelihoods and increasing smallholder incomes.
